What's Next for the Google Twin Ports Fiber Initiative

NeXT

I know many of you have been wondering what on earth is going on with the Google Fiber Initiative.

The short answer is, a lot of behind the scenes work.

We're planning for what of course we assume will be a visit by Google. And we're hoping that's going to happen some time this summer.

Many of you have also asked about the movie. That remains in the editing room. You'd be amazed how much work goes into editing one short film, which by the way will be called "Google Comes To Twin Ports." Everyone involved is a volunteer, so it's getting done as they have time in their schedules. Stay tuned on details regarding when that will debut.

So what can you do now?
We're still looking for people to make sure everyone they know has filled out a pledge card. I know the date on the pledge card says due March 20. But our strategy has changed, and we've decided to continue that effort until Google officially says they've chosen us. So be sure to continue to have people fill out the subscriber pledge on our website. If you'd like more cards, just e-mail giga.for.duluth@gmail.com, and we'll arrange for you to receive more.

Many of you have also been asking about the googlefiber.com contest on the city that most deserves Google Fiber.
We chose not to participate in his contest for three key reasons.

1. It doesn't matter. This is Google's decision, not a popularity contest. If it were, we would have already won, based on this report.

2. The site is owned by someone overseas with no ties to the actual effort.

3. You can easily vote over and over again. All you have to do is clear your history. So it's nothing more than a cheap trick that doesn't matter to anyone except the organizers.

If you took part, no harm done. We just didn't want to waste everybody's time taking part in a contest that doesn't matter.

Take care for now,
